Xiomara’s Birthday Party

Xiomara’s Birthday Party
Since Xiomara’s birthday is the first one to be celebrated in the class, it will always be remembered.  The event was held at her aunt’s house and was well attended.

Family Tree Project

Family Tree Project
We all had fun working on this project.  Jedadiah did all of the gluing, writing and memorizing of the presentation.  He was supposed to present the oral part on Friday, but his class never got to it.  I hope it will be done on Monday, as he has his presentation memorized.

Harvest Carnival

Harvest Carnival
Despite the cold and rainy weather it was a fun evening.  They had a talent show with 10 different student acts of either singing or dancing.  Several of the performers are quite talented.  Khin volunteered to be the sound man for the talent show and hauled all of his equipment for the event.  In addition there was a haunted house, games, and lots of food vendors. I tried a Mexican corn on the cob called elotes, where they put mayonnaise and parmesan cheese.  It was really tasty. We were supposed to wear Western Wear, but I think it was too cold to notice any clothes under the layers of jackets we were all wearing.

Kinder Awards

Four students from his class have completed all five of the listas, memorizing 50 words.  Dayana, Chelsea, Miguel and Jedadiah are the first to complete this gigantic task.
I was talking to Dayana’s mom yesterday, who mentioned that her daughter never attended preschool! Her daughter’s achievement is amazing to me.
So yesterday at the ceremony, Jedadiah earned 4 awards: 3 academic and one for Perfect Attendance.  Again, we are proud of all that he has learned and accomplished in the past several months.  He is off to a fantastic start!

Dual Immersion Parent Meeting, Tuesday, Nov. 1

Dual Immersion Parent Meeting
What a fun afternoon.  I was so proud of Khin for preparing a 5-question quiz about Burma and then singing a beautiful song in Ruwang.  My part was to cook shrimp fried rice and make nam pla (spicy fish sauce).  Every grain of rice was consumed.  Even Sra. Mendoza said the presentation/food was a great hit.
Another highlight was learning how to make a piñata.  First we blew up a balloon and then placed strips of newspaper dipped in starch around the balloon.  We were directed to put three layers of paper around the balloon and then wait for it to dry.   Then we were given supplies to continue the project at home.  We are to bring our completed piñata to the next meeting scheduled for February.  Another mom shared about music from Zacatecas.  It sounds like music played with brass instruments and the drum.  It’s played for special occasions like weddings, quinceneras and other parties.
the company's version of Zacatecas is based on the state's incredible and peculiar musical style: Tamborazo Zacatecano (The Zacatecas Big Drum band). This Wind and percussion instruments band is reminiscent of European ensembles left behind by the revolutionary movement of 1910.She also made a salad made of nopales. I have seen the cactus in the store but have never bought it because I don’t know how it is prepared.  The nopales looked like a green bean salad.

Week 13

Week 13

Baby Watch
Sra. Oliver’s husband has been coming to school with her the past few days. When her water breaks, they will race off to the hospital. Their 7th year wedding anniversary was on Tuesday.  After teaching all day, she had to help facilitate the Dual Immersion Parent Meeting.  On Monday, we all had a good laugh because Sra. Beranjanos dressed up like Sra. Oliver, with a huge belly, a protruding belly button and hair to match.  It was great!
As far as we know, Friday, November 4, was her final day before her maternity leave begins.
