Parent Meeting

This afternoon we had the first Dual Immersion Family Forum, where we met with the two teachers and some of the parents.  It was a fun meeting.  The meeting started with a few parents sharing Tres Cosas Buenas or Three Good Things that they like about the program.  Another fun activity they had was Que hay in la bolsa? Or what’s in the bag? We were divided into groups of about 6 people.  We had to pull out from the paper bag 10 words, 5 in English and 5 in Spanish.  We then had to choose a runner (me) who would “run” to the table across the room and select the appropriate item matching the word.  After that exercise, we then had to select two words, one in English and one in Spanish.  With these two words, we had to write a sentence using the word correctly and draw a picture of the word.  Finally, one person from each group had to present the poster to the group.  Sra. Oliver taught the parents to be proud of their accomplishments by giving a besito on the head.  It’s cute.  You kiss your fingers and then put the kiss on the top of your own head.  I have seen Jedadiah doing that but wasn’t exactly sure what he was doing.
Finally Sra. Oliver and Sra. Mendoza shared a bit about their culture.  Sra. Oliver was born in the US to parents native of Mexico.  She grew up playing the violin and singing in her father’s Mariachi band.  She said she never really fits into Mexico when she goes there but never really is fully accepted here either.
Our next meeting is November 1, the Day of the Dead.  Khin was selected to share about his culture!
